National Donut Day: Why Retro Donut Shop Design Still Rules
Three of Chicos, Old school Donut Shops (that use classic lettering and NO-AI)
As much as I appreciate the big chains, my heart belongs to local doughnut shops.
Walk into almost any independent doughnut shop, and you'll find hand-painted signs, vintage typography, neon lights, playful mascots, and logos that look like they've been there forever.
And that's exactly why they work.
These shops weren't designed by committees chasing trends. They were built by owners who wanted something memorable and welcoming. Their branding feels human.
You can often see the fingerprints of the person who created it.
The slightly imperfect lettering.
The retro color palettes.
The cartoon doughnuts.
The giant signs.
They're reminders of a time when businesses weren't trying to look like tech startups.
They were trying to be themselves.
The Anti-AI Donut Shop
The Donut Shop design should be like Homer Simpson's favorite pink-sprinkled doughnut. Simple. Timeless. Instantly recognizable. Yet still a little funky.
As designers, we're constantly surrounded by tools promising faster results and automated creativity.
Yet some of the most beloved visual identities in America come from an era before algorithms, before templates, and before artificial intelligence.
They came from sketchbooks.
They came from sign painters.
They came from people drawing ideas on napkins over coffee.
The local donut shop is a celebration of that spirit.
A poster I did of my favorite local Donut Shop; Donut Wheel.
It's colorful.
It's weird.
It's nostalgic.
It's imperfect.
And that's what makes it memorable.
Donut Shops are allowed to be fun. They're allowed to embrace color, personality, and a little bit of nostalgia.
Much like a great donut, great design doesn't need to be complicated.
Sometimes all it needs is a bright sign, a memorable logo, and enough personality to make someone smile.
And if you're wondering where I stand in the great donut debate:
Best donuts on the planet!!!
Team Buttermilk Bar. Team Apple Fritter. Forever.
Happy National Donut Day. 🍩
